Operating system fundamentals: basics
What is an operating system? Microsoft operating systems, Major
functions, major components, navigating the operating system,
retrieving technical information from the operating system,
major system files, using the command prompt.
Operating system fundamentals: files and disks
Basics, partitioning, formatting, file system types, backups
and restores, compression and encryption, file attributes.
Installation
Installing Windows 9x and Windows 2000, upgrades, dual boot,
automated and remote installs.
The boot process
How it works, Start up disks, safe mode, important files,
Emergency Repair Disks, clean boots, shutting down.
Devices
PnP, Device manager, device drivers and settings, troubleshooting.
Software maintenance
Service packs, Hotfixes, Application compatibility, Windows
updates. Running apps.
Administration tools
Audit policy, event viewer, diagnostic utilities, troubleshooting.
The control panel, system policy editor. The registry.
Troubleshooting
General approach, common problems, GPF, system lock up, hardware
issues, printers, Viruses.
Accessing file and print resources
Shared folders, permissions, network printers, what happened
to domains?, browsing.
Protocol stack overview
The 7 layer model, Ethernet, NICs, WANS, TCP/IP, Browsers,
Email.
Networking tools
ipconfig, winipcfg, tracert, nslookup, netstat.
