LINX ACCREDITED INTERNET TECHNICIAN COURSE PLUGS SKILLS GAP
The London Internet Exchange [21-09-2001]
The first candidates will tackle a tough examination next week (22 July) in a bid to achieve a top-level qualification as
Internet technicians. The fast-track training programme has been introduced by London Internet Exchange (LINX) to increase the
number and competence of people who build and maintain the UK's vital Internet infrastructure.
Launched last November, the LINX Accredited Internet Technician (LAIT) programme enforces rigorous standards by requiring a
minimum 70 per cent score to secure a pass grade in each of the entry-level, intermediate and advanced modules. While
several groups have successfully passed the entry and intermediate examinations, next week will see the first candidates
tackling the advanced module.
The intensive, five-day module tests candidates' expertise in technologies such as border gateway protocol, multi-protocol
label switching, security firewalls and virtual private networks. LINX technical and training manager Hugh Spencer said:
"The resilience and efficiency of the UK Internet infrastructure and its capacity to support the demands of business and
private users ultimately depends upon the skills of the engineers and technicians who construct and maintain the network.
"It is essential that LINX accreditation of Internet technicians maintains the highest standards of competency and that is
reflected in the demanding nature of this qualification."
Redhill-based Systems & Network Training Ltd is delivering the LAIT training, which is designed primarily for people who
already have IT engineering skills but need additional training in Internet-specific technologies. Systems & Network Training
founder Steve Groombridge added: "Despite the consolidation in the Internet industry, there are encouraging numbers of people
wanting to achieve the LAIT qualification. We could have easily set a lower pass score but that would only have devalued the
qualification.
LINX is widely respected as being at the heart of the UK Internet community and this accreditation will establish the highest
standards of technical competence."LINX is also working with UK universities to produce a LINX Accredited Internet Engineer
qualification for graduates and is developing a web-based bulletin board to co-ordinate work experience placements for
undergraduates who want careers in the Internet industry. LINX owns and maintains high-capacity routing equipment at nine
London-based tele-hotels to provide inter-connections between the networks of its membership of 120 Internet service
providers (ISPs) and content delivery service providers. Its facilities handle up to 96 per cent of UK Internet traffic with
peak volumes currently exceeding 16 gigabits per second.
